New bag, new recipe, new protein: whatever the reason, a sudden switch can upset a dog's stomach. Most vets suggest moving to a new food gradually over about a week. Here is the schedule we use, and a few tips for picky or sensitive eaters.
A simple 7-day plan
| Days | Old food | New food |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | 75% | 25% |
| 3 and 4 | 50% | 50% |
| 5 and 6 | 25% | 75% |
| 7 | 0% | 100% |
If your dog has loose stools or loses interest, slow down and stay at the current step for a couple more days. If problems continue, call your vet.
Pick the right next bag
- Active dogs often do well on a higher-protein recipe such as Adult Dry Dog Food made with red meat.
- For sensitive stomachs, a salmon recipe like Stomach Dog Food is designed for delicate digestion.
- Grain-free households can look at Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food. Ask your vet first if you are unsure whether grain-free suits your dog.
Picky eaters
A spoonful of wet dog food topper can make a new kibble more interesting. Count it as part of the daily amount so you do not overfeed.
Cats, too
The same gradual approach works well for cats, who can be even more particular. Mix the new food in slowly and keep fresh water nearby.
